Costa Rica Fishing: South Pacific
Travel destination review
South Pacific Coast
The South Pacific Region of Costa Rica features the remote and rugged Osa Peninsula, one of Costa Rica’s true treasures. The area is not as popular of a travel destination as its northern neighbors, but that is certainly not due to a lack of natural beauty, friendly people, pristine beaches, lush rainforest, exciting adventures, or fabulous fishing. The South Pacific Region has it all. The rainforest on the Osa peninsula is one of the most biologically diverse places on earth. Eco-tourism is a rapidly growing industry with wilderness lodges cropping up all over the region. Hiking, and guided tours through this dense wilderness will yield natural treasures unmatched anywhere. Puerto Jiminez, a quiet beach town on the peninsula’s southeast side, is the gateway to the stunning Corcovado National Park, a true jungle paradise, with an unmatched diversity of wildlife including, jaguar, tapir, many kinds of monkey, two and three toed sloth, macaws, toucans, red eyed tree frogs, colorful poison dart frogs, crocodiles, and more.
Across the Golfo Dulce on Costa Rica’s south Pacific coast is the charming port city of Golfito. Once a bustling port and the home of a major banana producer, Golfito is now a peaceful and beautiful area rich with wilderness lodges, dense rainforest, duty free shopping, fresh local cuisine, and a warm, friendly local community. Here, where the Pacific Ocean currents meet the calm waters of the Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica’s deepest bay, an upwelling of nutrients from the deep waters brings large schools of bait fish which attracts huge numbers of very large fish. Black marlin, blue marlin, striped marlin, sailfish, wahoo, dorado (mahi-mahi, or dolphin fish), yellowfin tuna, and barracuda are prize deep water catches. Inshore fishing here is second to none with excellent fishing year round fishing for roosterfish, snook, snapper, amberjack, mackerel, grouper, pompano, jack Crevalle, and more. If lush, tropical wilderness, remote and secluded beaches, ultra –fresh seafood and ripe tropical fruits, calm blue seas, and stellar fishing appeal to you, there is no better place than Costa Rica’s south Pacific Coast for an unforgettable sport fishing vacation.
